5 must-have games for 2017
2016 marked the release of some incredible triple ‘A’ video game titles, making it a tough year to follow for game devs. 2017 has a lot to prove and these are the 5 titles we’re most excited to see drop this year. In no particular order here are our 5 must-have games for 2017.
Horizon: Zero Dawn
We all have our favourite game series but it’s always nice to see game developers take risks on new IPs. Guerilla Games is doing just that. The Killzone developer has been hard at work producing Horizon Zero Dawn, a fresh take on what looks like a third person action RPG. From what we’ve seen between E3 2016 and the Playstation Experience event held last September, Horizon is shaping up to be one beautiful looking title. Aside from the stunning visuals, the hunting gameplay mechanics and exploration elements have me more than intrigued. We won’t be waiting long with an expected release date within February of 2017.
Halo Wars 2
Speaking of much-loved franchises – Even non-gamers will recognize the name Halo. A spinoff of the Master Chief saga, Halo Wars was a popular real-time strategy game for PC and Xbox. This sequel promises higher unit population counts, which was a huge criticism of the original. The original title was built around the controller allowing players to play from their couch as opposed to locked to a keyboard and mouse approach found in most strategy games. Building on this strength the second iteration promises more improvements to the control scheme that will make it easier and faster for players to deliver commands. Halo Wars fans can look forward to a beta release in early 2017.
Mass Effect: Andromeda
The original Mass Effect trilogy revolved around Commander Sheppard, the game’s main protagonist and overall badass. Beyond Sheppard, the entire cast and whole galaxy was well illustrated through smart choice-driven story telling and a deep lore. Paired with some pretty memorable gameplay this third-person shooter RPG had lots to offer its fans.
Set hundreds of years after the original trilogy, Mass Effect: Andromeda promises to please long time fans and new comers alike. Following a new crew of characters into unexplored space the ‘reboot’ will also build on the franchise’s much-loved gameplay.
Optimized for PS4 Pro and appeasing the PC Master race with unlocked frame rates we’re sure Andromeda will also look incredible. Take a peak for yourself.
Guardians of the Galaxy: Telltale series
Telltale is no stranger when it comes to huge Blockbuster franchises. Batman, Game of Thrones and the Walking Dead are just three of the huge names they tackled in 2016.
Regardless of the franchise, you pretty much know what to expect when playing a Telltale game. Quick time events and story-based choices are the studio’s signature attributes. This isn’t a bad thing. The laid back gameplay is honestly the best when you’re not sure if you want to catch up on some TV or throw in a game – Telltale is a solid middle ground.
There haven’t been many updates regarding this title but one can expect that it will likely line up near the release of Guardians of the Galaxy 2 in April of 2017. Needless to say, we’re excited to see how TellTale depicts of favourite band of misfit heroes.
South Park: The Fractured But Whole
Behind its unapologetic and immature surface South Park has to be one of the most brilliant satirical comedies on TV today. With a strong fan base, the series was given its second video game treatment in 2014 with South Park: The Stick Of Truth, which audiences and critics reviewed very receptivity.
As a direct sequel , South Park: The Fractured But Whole will keep some of the turn-based RPG elements that worked so well but shifts gears from fantasy to comic books as this title looks to spoof the Marvel/DC cinematic universe. This definitely gives show-runners Matt Stone and Trey Parker a wealth of material to dig into. We can’t wait to see what they come up with.
I’m sure I missed loads of potential hit! So I want to hear your thoughts, which games are you most excited to see release in 2017?
