Confessions of a former Pokémon Go addict
When Pokemon Go became available this past July I was mildly interested considering I’d grown up with the TV show and original games (dam, I’m old).
The transition from casually interested to full blown addiction all happened within the first 48-hours. My girlfriend had teased me but after some convincing had downloaded the app just to appease me. That last sentence is the exact anecdote she shares when explaining to people why and how she started playing – as most adults feel the need to explain why they’re taking part in a ‘kids game’.
The following weeks lead to endless walks and adventures bringing us both to parts of our city we may not have explored before. Heck, we might not have left our coach at all some Friday nights had it not been for the lure of catching some unknown Pokemon.
Nearing the end of August I had completely fallen off the game and tapped back into my regular routines. Although, I do fancy a walk or run a little more often.
My girlfriend however has kept playing. Not like the fiend she once was but still playing. She, of course, has been attempting to lure me back in, while on numerous accounts taunting me with the fact that she’s surpassed my level.
I’m not so sure I could jump back in without some serious revisions to the core game itself. In the month+ that I was playing I felt like I had seen everything PoGo had to offer. Everything had just started to become really repetitive and mundane. I’m not alone on this – current user engagement and daily active users are already in a serious decline.
On occasion I’ll google search ‘Pokemon Go updates’ just to see if there is something to look forward to or pull me back in. The developers at Niantic have eluded to major upcoming updates including trading, Player v Player battles and ‘buddy‘ Pokemon that travel with you. Any of these updates would need to be pretty epic to get me to start playing regularly again.
So, how far did you get in your own Pokemon Go adventure? What would you like to see in future updates?
