DJI OSMO Mobile – Cinematic video from your smartphone?
DJI is currently sitting on the throne when it comes to drones. They recently entered the handheld camera space with the DJI OSMO, which combined their tried and true stabilization technology and proprietary drone cameras. The result was awesome but looking to appeal to general consumers DJI took another shot at it with the DJI OSMO Mobile, which allows users to combine DJI’s stabilization tech with their own smartphones.
One awesome feature that allows the OSMO Mobile to stand apart from it’s competitors is the auto tracking feature built into the DJI Go app. The feature allows the user to select and track a person or object in real time while recording. This feature alone makes the device a killer option for vloggers. Even more impressively this option works for both the rear and front facing cameras!
The real bread and butter for the OSMO Mobile is its ability to smooth out your smartphone’s video, giving it that polished cinematic look your on board stabilization just can’t deliver. These shots can be captured in an upright mode mode for regular shots, under-slung for low shots, portrait mode for apps like Snapchat and flashlight mode to add even more stability while you’re in motion.
One thing that the original OSMO offered that the mobile version lost was the external microphone input. Where we once had an audio port now acts as the device’s charging port. 3.5mm to usb for charging? Weird. With that said, numerous users have successfully plugged in external mics directly into their smartphones while maintaining balance on the OSMO Mobile. This hacked solution actually works on larger phones like the iPhone 7 Plus and Note 7.
The biggest appeal for general consumers should be the price point. At $299USD ($399CAD) its not a large pill to swallow, especially if you’re trying to get great footage out of your smartphone.
