Geek Playlist: Back to School Jams (Sept 2015)
August is unfortunately almost over which means summer vacation is coming to an end and it’s back to school … unless you’re out of school in which you have colder weather to look forward too. With all this being said there are some good things to look forward to with new album releases this September (which generally means a new touring cycle as well, so keep an eye out for those). Here are some picks that have the crew at Typical Geek excited.
Iron Maiden – The Book of Souls
British heavy metal legends are back with their first ever studio double album which comes as a surprise since the band’s lead vocalist Bruce Dickinson has recently recovered from treatment to remove a cancerous tumor. Needless to say if you’re a heavy metal fan this is definitely an album to look forward too.
Travi$ Scott – Rodeo
Unless you’ve been living under a rock (or don’t listen to hip hop music, I don’t judge) Travi$ Scott is quickly making his way up the hip hop ladder. This will be his debut studio album with collaborations ranging from trap beat heavy weights Metro Boomin and Zaytoven to hip hop artists such as ScHoolboy Q, Kanye, Young Thug, Future, and more. Some stand out featuring artists include Paul McCartney (with Kanye yet again, possible new BFFs?), Justin Beiber, and Toro y Moi.
Slayer – Repentless
September seems to be a good month for metal fans as another metal heavyweight and one of the “Big Four” in thrash metal are coming out with their eleventh studio album. With recent line up changes this will be the first album featuring Gary Holt of Exodus on guitar and Paul Bostaph on drums since their 2001’s release ‘God Hates Us All’.
Beirut – No No No
The indie folk band from Santa Fe, New Mexico are back again with this new release. With their last three albums being favored among critics one can only assume that this album will please fans and critics alike.
Mac Miller – GO:OD AM
Two years later after ‘Watching Movies’ with the ‘Sound Off’, Mac is back with his third studio album. Luckily Mac Miller fans didn’t have to wait too long for some new music as later that year he released an album under the alias Delusion Thomas and just last year he released a 24 song mixtape.
Avicii – Stories
EDM superstar Avicii told Rolling Stone July 2014 that he’d be working on a new album and the wait is almost over. There’s still not a whole lot of information on this album but it is expected that there will be lots of different collaborations including Wyclef Jean, Chris Martin, and an unconfirmed Jon Bon Jovi collaboration (interesting mix to say the least). Either way it’s almost guarantee that there are going to be some massive hits off this record.
The Game – The Documentary 2
The Game (or simply just Game last I heard) is back with a sequel to his 2005 release, ‘The Documentary’. There’s no confirmed track list yet but The Game has confirmed he’s working with artists such as Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul, Dr. Dre, Drake, and Kayne West.
The Dead Weather – Dodge and Burn
This bluesy garage rock supergroup is back for another album release for the first time since 2010. If you’re unfamiliar with them, get familiar because this supergroup includes Jack White and Dean Fertita and for me anything with involving Jack White is always a good time.
Fetty Wap – Fetty Wap
If you don’t recognize the name you can definitely recognize his voice since he currently has a slew of super catchy singles out, including “Trap Queen” and “My Way”. Not much information has been released yet but album is almost guaranteed to include more catchy hip hop songs that he’s best known for.
Disclosure – Caracal
Doesn’t seem that long ago when every radio station was playing ‘Latch’ featuring Sam Smith. This super catchy song a breakthrough song for both Disclosure and Sam Smith, so needless to say I’m really looking forward to this release as there is another collaboration from the two, as well as Miguel, The Weeknd, and Lorde. Judging by the 3 different singles that have been released over the summer this album should be a banger!
The Dear Hunter – Act IV: Rebirth in Reprise (one of my favourite bands so I’m super excited about this one)
The Wonder Years – No Closer to Heaven
HSY – Bask
The World Is a Beautiful Place and I Am No Longer Afraid To Die – Harmlessness
The Underachievers – Evermore: The Art of Duality
Lana Del Rey – Honeymoon
