Movie Review in a Nutshell: Arrival
Arrival was one of the many flicks we caught during this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. Scratching our itch for some sci-fi goodness, Arrival delivered an intelligent and satisfying take on the classic alien movie.
Canadian filmmaker and director Denis Villeneuve has already delivered powerful films at past TIFF presentations including Sicario and Prisoners. This might be his first jump into the genre but he’s accomplished it masterfully. Likely, a great teaser of what he might accomplish with the upcoming Blade Runner sequel.
The movie itself Follows linguistics specialist Dr.Louise Banks – played by Amy Adams – and portrays a chaotic world adapting to a new alien presence while human civilization balances on the edge of a potential global war. Without spoiling too much, Arrival does an excellent job placing human nature and fear against human potential and hope.
Combining an intensely poignant situation, with thrilling effects, strong acting and lingering suspense results in a unique and intelligent Sci-Fi experience. You can judge for yourself when it hits theatres on November 10.
