Top 5 tips for dating a Geek
In a lavish lifestyle of hair, nails, make-up and accessories, something happened. I tripped and fell…in love with a geek. It is a whole new experience for me, to say the least. Most of the guys I know usually have an affinity towards tech and gadgets, however, my current significant other is on a whole other level. Of course, I’m referring to the O.G.(original geek) himself.
It has definitely been a fun run so far!
However, those who are ussually less geek-inclined might experience a few “head-scratching” or “smile-and-nod” moments. In the spirit of spreading love and exploring new interests, here are my top 5 tips for dating a geek (and coming out alive).
It should be observed and upheld with the same sanctity of Christmas, Easter, Kwanza, Rosh Hashana, Chinese New Year, Eid, etc. If you’re not a devout member of the Jedi Council, or Fleet Junkies, or any other moniker used to describe the Star Wars fan base, it’s okay – I wasn’t either (*gasps). But there are many ways to celebrate without being a life-long fan.
Make a day out of it. Whether it’s a large gathering or an intimate day, Star Wars themed snacks, decorations and even accessories can be thrown together quite easily to accompany your movie marathon.
I’m a firm believer that there is something fun for everyone, only after you figure out your own skills and preferences. I am what you call a “button-masher”. This means that I can kick butt, so long as there is no actual, umm, skill involved… I enjoy fighting games where there are minimal combinations or directions of any kind. Some of my favorite games to play are Mortal Combat, Street Fighter and God of War.
Being a spectator can be fun too. If you enjoy stories, as I do, there are some pretty interesting storylines that you can follow along with while your lover takes on the world – it’s just like watching a movie! A couple of story-lines I enjoyed were inFamous Second Son and Batman Arkham Knight.
Experiment together to find what works for you. It may not always be successful, (Mario Kart on Wii was a train-wreck for me), but you’ll have fun trying together.
Don’t feel the need to know everything, half the fun is in learning and teaching. Giving my geek the opportunity to teach and explain things that he is most passionate about, is not only beneficial for me.
I love seeing my geek’s face light up when he’s able to strengthen his own confidence on a topic and explore new ways to help me learn and get involved.
This is definitely a tip that is beneficial in all facets of life.
Learning new things about your interests, skills and each other, helps to strengthen your overall connection. My geek and I are always hunting for new hobbies to take on together, both geek and non-geek related, familiar or not, the whole point is we take it on together.
Take advantage of having a geek around
Within the first few months of dating my geek, I had my Smart TV set up, I actually learnt what a Smart TV does, Netflix magically appeared, Popcorn Time was discovered, Laptops were fixed, Laptop chargers were replaced, and cigarettes became vaporizers. These are only a few benefits to having a geek around.
Geeks just seem to know everything, although no one person can know everything, right? Geeks have a need to discover newer and more efficient methods for absolutely anything. There are tech life-hacks to everything imaginable, and they are the key.
Need a camera with a high enough resolution to capture nail art, landscapes, whatever you prefer? They will find the best one. Need an instant messaging platform shared only between the two of you? They will find an app for that. Need to find out what is lacking from your fitness routine and preventing you from reaching your ideal goal? They will find you the most appropriate fit bracelet or smart watch, as well as sync everything to your phone and get you a better charger.
Appreciate your geek for what they have to offer, and take the time to learn things yourself along the way!
Spice things up
If all else fails, and you seem like you’re simply not cut-out for geek life, play dress up! Dressing up like their fantasy crush, playing out scenes and experimenting with cos-play can all lead to some steamy, geeky action. The whole point is to have fun – together.
If Rachael can do it, so can you.
