What you need to know about Rocket League Hoops
The long awaited Hoops update for Rocket League is now out; just in time for NBA playoffs. The update was shared April 25th and we wasted no time in trying it out. Here’s our take – so far:
Dunk House is very different from the Snow Day (hockey) and all of the soccer maps. The court is significantly smaller and the cage that makes up the wall wraps around the top allowing for bank shots off the ceiling.
The net touches the floor and acts like a force field; where the ball bounces off, but cars can drive through. This can be useful for both scoring and defending. It helps when trying to score because you can pop the ball up using the net and then tap it in. Or you can drive through the and perform an aerial to hit the ball out.
The face off has also been changed to a tip off where the ball drops from the ceiling.
Online play is restricted to 2v2, while the other game modes have more size options.
The Game Play
The strategy required for Hoops is different from the other maps because how to score has changed.
We identified three ways to score.
- Hit the ball up to arch into the net.
- Bank it off a wall, ceiling, or backboard into the net.
- Run up the wall with the ball and gently roll it into the net.
Based on the ways to score you may want to change the car that you use. You may also want to train up on aerials because this can be the difference between getting rejected or “dunking” on some punk.
The Newly Added Accessories
- free NBA Logo antenna
- DLC for all NBA Team Logos antennas (buying this allows you to keep track of your “dunks”)
- a ton of new country flag antennas
- a few community flag antennas
- a few more free video games antennas
- one Worms W.M.D. topper
This is fundamentally a different game, but come on, we obviously obsessed over it and played until our thumbs bled.
We loved the challenge of learning to play a new mode and the new accessories. Especially the team logos that track your dunk count and allow you to rep your favourite NBA team. We also love how the camera now zooms in on whoever scores. This was a game-changer. Trying to get into the net for the score cam during your own goals and trying to annihilate your friends in their score cams.
We ‘re hoping the next update includes a few performance improvements and potentially open up for 3v3 online game play.
Overall, we’re impressed by Hoops and can’t wait for what’s coming next … maybe a baseball theme?
